With the New Year approaching Rabbi David Woznica offers a twist on the popular resolution of beginning a diet. This week he offers inquiries into Torah teachings that elevate the act of eating. Here are his thoughts about this spiritual diet.

Why Keep Kosher:
Culinary Spiritual Mindfulness

If mindfulness is being present and more aware of our actions, keeping kosher can be described as “culinary spiritual mindfulness.” Judaism takes the act of eating and elevates it from the mundane to the spiritual.

When reading a restaurant menu or inquiring about the ingredients in a dish, every time we eat we are reminded of our Judaism and that God gave us Torah teachings about what is permissible to eat. The act of eating, then, becomes an expression of our Judaism and a kosher diet is an act of Jewish commitment for us and an example for our children.
