Who can register for The Academy? And what are the graduation requirements?
Wise Temple member teens entering Grades 8-10 are eligible to enroll. Academy students graduate in the spring of their Grade 11 year. To graduate, a student must complete two academic years with a minimum of 24 credits each year.
What happens after I register for The Academy? And, what are The Academy courses and how do I learn more about them?
Once registered, each student will receive a confirmation e-mail with detailed information, including dates and times, about the courses and events that are available, along with a handbook about The Academy. The Academy course names are listed in The Academy calendar.
What is the time commitment for the Academy?
Unlike other supplementary educational programs that require one class per week for a total of 26-30 weeks, students are required to take one 8-week course of their choice, in addition to participating in other informal educational opportunities such as social programs, community service, and Friday night services. Even when adding these experiences, based on each student’s schedule, The Academy requires less time than other programs. Students who already attend Jewish educational programs such as Milken or Hebrew High are encouraged, but not required, to take Academy courses.
How do I choose my courses and events?
Students may register online for courses and events, or can come to The Academy Welcome Party to meet other participants, learn more about each course, and choose courses with their friends. Students also receive a class registration form in the Welcome Packet which can be completed and mailed in at any time. Upon registration, students will be sent more information about Welcome Party.
Can I get community service credit for my school when I participate in The Academy social action programs?
If the student’s school approves The Academy programs, they will be given credit for both The Academy and the school.
Can I take more than one Academy class or can I attend more than one social action program?
Students are only required to complete a minimum of 24 credits each academic year and engage in as many courses, activities, and programs as their schedule allows. Students who go above the minimum credit requirement will be designated as part of “Rabbi Herscher’s Honor Circle” and will be made mention in college recommendations.
If I am receiving my formal Jewish education at another institution, is The Academy beneficial for me?
Yes! The Academy is designed to enhance a student’s junior and high school education, regardless of what school they attend. For those attending Jewish day schools, The Academy offers a wide variety of Jewish learning opportunities that might not otherwise be available in their formal education. Moreover, The Academy encourages students to engage in the Temple community by offering other types of experiences they may not receive at their school.
