In the Talmud, both Hillel and Shamai are asked by a would-be convert to be taught the entire Torah while standing on one foot. The two respond quite differently. Shamai dismisses him immediately. Perhaps he assumed that the task was impossible. But Hillel gives a different answer. Hillel counsels, “What is hateful to you, do not do to your friend. That is the basis of the Torah. The rest is commentary; go and learn!" Hillel invites the seeker of knowledge to continueto seek knowledge. Hillelignitesthe spark.
