Nathan Lam has been a cantor most of his life. Born in Los Angeles, he began the study of Hazzanut at the age of eight under the tutelage of Cantor Allan Michelson. At the age of 16, he was engaged by a leading congregation to serve as its cantor for the High Holy Days. Cantor Lam holds an Honoris Causa from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
Cantor Lam joined Stephen S. Wise Temple in 1976. The Temple has established scholarships in his name that are given to students at the H.L. Miller Cantorial School of the Jewish Theological and to students at the School of Sacred Music at Hebrew Union College.He is founding Dean of The Academy of Jewish Religion, California, Cantorial School. He has been president of the Cantor Assembly, the largest organization of cantors worldwide, and currently serves as president of the Cantors Assembly Foundation. He has developed a group of children called M’Shor’rim, Synagogue singers who sing at special events and the High Holy Days. These children delight and inspire the congregation with their solos and interpretations of the liturgy.
Cantor Lam and his wife Donna share the joy of two wonderful children. Michael is a graduate of the University of Southern California and is married to Alexis White and Jenna from the University of Wisconsin and is married to Joey Pitson. The Lams are delighted to have three wonderful grandchildren and consider their greatest accomplishment to be the commitment to Jewish life and Israel exemplified by their children and grandchildren.
