Milken Community High School’s Sports Science and Medicine Department under the leadership of Ms. Summer Bloom ATC, EMT-B, physically prepares student athletes for the rigors of high school athletics. The Department enhances sport performance and minimizes the risk of injury by improving strength, power, speed, and conditioning through a sport-specific program administered in a safe, competitive environment.
This environment is created through the professional skills of caring sports medicine personnel. The staff provides a program for the prevention of athletic injuries and illnesses, and brings the knowledge and training needed to effect recovery and return to sport performance and healthy living.
Strength and Conditioning - We are proud to announce Chris Scarlata as our new Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Milken Community High School athletics program. Coach Scarlata has been trained by the National Academy of Sports medicine as a personal trainer, completed the Athlete’s Performance mentorship program, and is ceritifiedas a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Coach Scarlata has worked with athletes of all ages and ability levels in numerous sports. His primary focuss’ are developing pillar strength, balance, dissociation, explosiveness, and reaction. These things he believes will help develop athletes that are committed to lifelong fitness.
The Strength and Conditioning program physically and mentally prepares athletes for the specific fitness demands of their sport. The program stimulates sport specific movement and athletic techniques, and helps student athletes achieve increased muscular strength, power, agility, proprioception, and benefit from injury prevention exercises.
It incorporates sports specific periodized training consisting of circuit training in the weight room, and plyometric, speed, and agility outdoor training. Strength and conditioning support during these supervised sessions maximizes gains in sport specific fitness in the safest and most efficient manner possible.
Elements of the program include:
Sports Medicine - The sports medicine team consists of a certified Athletic Trainer, Summer Bloom, along with the consultation and supervision of Byron Patterson, M.D. The team provides a variety of services, including injury prevention, recognition, immediate care, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. When an athlete is injured, the sports medicine team collaborates with administrators, coaches, and parents in the education of the rehabilitation process while keeping them updated on the athlete’s progress.
Some examples of the services provided by the sports medicine team are:
analysis of injuries
demonstration of physical stretches and rehabilitative movements
taping, bandaging and stretching of athletes
use of modality machines such as ultrasound, stimulation, and hot packs
implementation of exercise and rehabilitation
